The study of the biological basis of ageing is now a mature research field that could eventually offer effective applications to ease the burden of old age. ageing as an emergent phenomenon that takes place primarily in protected environments our bodies have evolved over millions of years and have been optimized through evolution to ensure proliferation and survival of the species, rather than a long lifespan for the individual.
